We'll work with you to have the whole event scripted out before the day of your wedding, and when the day comes, we'll work to make sure it happens the way we planned it. We'll work side-by-side with the caterers, photographer, musicians, officiants and make sure everyone is informed of the schedule, what we're doing next, at what time etc. Unforeseen events almost always come up, and we'll be sure to work with you to change the schedule as necessary. For example, the cake cutting was set to be at 7pm, but at 5pm, it's been so hot that the cake has started to melt. We'll work with the caterer, the photographer and you to change the schedule and get the cake cut and pictures taken before the cake turns into something ....that is no longer a wedding cake.
When you hear the term 'Wedding DJ', do you have thoughts of dreadful, loudmouth, sports announcers - hyping the crowd? Does the term CHEESY come to mind? At Soundwavz, we abhor the cheesy DJ, and we do whatever we can to stay far away from the stereotype. Our announcements are tasteful, clear and concise - upbeat enough to keep your guests awake, but definitely not cheesy. Again, when it's time to pack the dance floor, we prefer to let the music do the talking. Playing the right song at the right time, reading the crowd, playing something for everyone is our hallmark.

The roots of Soundwavz began over 40 years ago in Motown, where Soundwavz founder Don Vaquera played drums in the Motown scene. After starting a family and settling down, he kept playing music, playing in a wedding band for over a decade. Later in his career , with experience learned producing award-winning videos in the U.S. Army, Don then formed an industrial video production company, producing awardwinning videos for Ford Motor Co., Cadillac Motor Division, Chrysler UAW and other automotive related clients.
In 1991, Don's son, Tom Vaquera took up the family torch and began work as a DJ in South Beach Miami, FL, working not only clubs and discos, but as the resident wedding DJ at Links of Key Biscayne. In 1998, Tom was married on the Outer Banks, and discovered there was an amazing demand for quality wedding DJs. In a matter of months, Soundwavz was born, managing 12 weddings in the first year, quickly increasing to over 100 events per year. In 2001, Don's daughter, Jill Keller also joined the family business as both DJ and administrative co-ordinator. We have 4 additional staff DJ’s to do an excellent job during peak wedding months.
Approximately 3 years ago, Soundwavz took their years of experience in professional video, combined with years of wedding experience and began to offer High Definition wedding video. A perfect marriage - we think the results speak for themselves.

Best advice you have? Do your homework! It is an amazing place to get married and you want to work with people who feel as strongly about your "Special Day" as you do. References and referrals are key! Look for the vendors that work together-there is a reason for that. Make sure each vendor is a good fit for your personality-after all they will be with you on one of the most important days of your life. We have turned people away-sometimes you just know it is not a good fit-for whatever reason-so make sure you are comfortable with your vendors.
What is your favorite part of the job? The point where the dancing has really begun and we get the crowd into a "frenzy" (hands in the airjumping around) and all are having the time of their lives. It is so rewarding to hear from various guests throughout the evening how much they are enjoying the music and the selections. We get numerous cards and letters from brides that they really “had the time of their life.”
What is your favorite place? All of it! We feel very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and peaceful place!
What are your favorite hobbies? Our families! We work hard during the season so we can enjoy the time with them in the off season doing all of the wonderful things that the OBX has to offer, surfing, sporting clays, golf, hanging out at the beach, basketball, lots of walks on the beach, ANYTHING at the beach!
What is your favorite meal? This differs for all of us-but some favorites...fish tacos from Mama Kwans, steamed shrimp and margaritas from Chili Peppers, tuna and a sunset from The Blue Pointe.
