When I talk with most brides, hiring a videographer is usually at the bottom of their list of to dos for their wedding.  But for some who decided to include them into their wedding plans, it’s quickly becomes one of the most cherished showpieces of their wedding day.  So as you begin the journey sitting through many websites and show reels, here are a few things to consider.

We believe that gathering a team of professionals is key to have a great wedding and this goes the same for who is behind the lens.  In both photography and film the easiest way to determine whether you want to hire the artist is to look at their body of work.  If you like what you see in the videographer’s demo reel, start there.  If not, move on until you find the right fit.

There are many talented videographers emerging in this era of easily assessable DSLR cameras and affordable equipment but be sure to look for the style and creative aesthetics that best reflect you and your fiancé.  Some emerging image-makers have a real gift in creating pretty pictures but are still figuring out the difficult task of capturing good sound.  You will be looking for a videographer who shows competence in both.

Ultimately your wedding day should be enjoyable so hiring a videographer that is easy to communicate with will make the entire process stress free.  From your initial conversation express clearly what you are looking for in event coverage and then allow the videographer to see which package or service works best for your budget.

Some common questions to start with are;

• Do you shoot with HD cameras and will you shoot multiple angles?
• Will you be using multiple wireless lavaliere mics on both the minister and at least the groom?
• Will you have multiple people on the shoot?
• Do you supply your own lights in the event the reception area is too dark?

If you’re still on the fence about videography consider some of these aspects of what you’ll be investing in.  Unlike photography, this will be an actual depiction of the day as you hear the vows exchanged, speeches given and, of course, the antics on the dance floor that only happen once.  A picture is worth a thousand words and a thousand “moving pictures” are priceless.  Your wedding day in the hands of creative cameramen can take your living memories and turn them into a work of art to be replayed on DVD.
