Reverend Jay Bowman

Outer Banks Wedding Officiant Loved By Brides

1. Name of Business?

“@ YOUR OBX WEDDING” : Rev. Jay Bowman.          myouterbankswedding.com

2. What services does your business provide brides?

Basically helping you through the journey of planning and creating a wedding ceremony that is taylor made for You. Keeping it stress free as much as possible, and making it fun. And of course, taking care of the legal aspects of the marriage license with the state of North Carolina.

3. Business Philosophy ?

Hmmmm…..philosophy. I didn’t score very well with that subject in undergrad, but it pretty much falls to this for me…… I serve and care for couples like I would want to be served and cared for. Listening closely to what couples really want in their wedding ceremony is key, and then of course pulling it off in a very comfortable, natural, and special way that totally reflects the promise of your Big Day. I believe a wedding should be performed in a professional way with a lot of honor, but here on the beach it should also be Fun and lighthearted with a lot of smiles and probably some laughter.

4. What things help set you apart and make you unique on the Outer Banks?

This one is sort of hard for me to answer because I never get to see any of the other officiant’s work. A photographer can see the images of other photographers, etc. I do know this, that I’m one of the only “career” ministers out here in the Outer Banks Wedding Association, now in my 30th year. That brings a lot of experience when it comes to reading a couple, a crowd, and a moment, to make it very “real” and not canned. Anyone can just read words out of a book, but I believe it is more of an artistic gift to take the wishes of a couple and make it come alive in a treasured moment with their toes in the sand. That’s what I love to do, and I believe that is some of what makes me unique our here on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

5. How long have you been in business and where?

Well, as I mentioned above, this is my 30th year as an ordained minister, but we have lived out here in Kitty Hawk for the past 6 years, performing weddings from Hatteras Village to Carova. I served three different churches before that in Michigan, Florida, and then Colorado. But I gotta tell ya, as great as those other places were, this big sandbar is the best spot of all. Gotta love it!

6. What is some of your best advice you would give a friend who was going to be married on the Outer Banks?

I would say:

(1) Make your bookings as early as your key vendors will allow you to so that you are able to get the team you want.

(2) Get reliable references for your vendors and do your homework. It’s easy to have a fancy website, but not deliver.

(3) Lean on your vendors for help. That’s why we are here. We live here and can help the whole “destination” thing be less stressful.

(4) Get the professionals you want, and then let them fly and do what they do best.

(5) Keep it FUN!

7. What is your favorite part of your job?

I enjoy so many parts of my job, but my very most favorite is performing the ceremony itself. Once we get to that moment I know I am tracking with everything the bride and groom wants and away we go. It’s like getting up to bat and knowing you are going to hit a triple or a home run every time! I know that may sound cocky, but it’s really not. I’m just confident that it’s going to turn out awesome and that the couple, their family, and the guests, will all be thrilled.

8.Where is your favorite place on the OBX?

I gotta go with anything south on the Hatteras National Seashore, but it’s all beautiful. Gotta love it.

9. What are your favorite hobbies or passions beyond your work?

Hanging with family and our dog Kahuna, running and working out, wood art, fishing in the fall, and just plain being on the beach.

10. Just for fun, what would your all time favorite meal be?

This one is easy for me. Steak, Baked Potato, Broccoli, Salad, and Hot Buttered Bread!!

Magical, fun, affordable and unforgettable

Five years ago I thought we were moving to the Outer Banks to semi-retire, but little did I know.

I had served as a pastor in three different churches around the country over a span of 24 years and was ready to take a break. What better place to take a good break than the Outer Banks of North Carolina!

It wasn’t even on my radar that a few years later I would have the great honor and fun of tying the Outer Banks knot for hundreds of couples getting their toes in the sand to say “I do”.

Who wants to be retired when you can hang out with tons of happy people on an island beach, and on top of that to to work barefoot each day. I mean come on, does it get any better than that?

So my wife Kim, our daughter Summer, and our two dogs Cooper and Kahuna, are having a big ‘ole time living here in Kitty Hawk on the infamous Outer Banks. We truly feel that in many ways we are “living the dream”.

Destination Weddings are becoming more popular all the time and for good reasons. The Outer Banks has made it’s mark as one of the (if not “The”) premiere destination locations on the whole eastern seaboard. It’s magical, fun, affordable, and unforgettable. I never dreamed five years ago my story would have unfolded on the beach like this, but I am so thankful and happy it did.

  1. Jay,

I would attend your weddings just for the fun! You were one of the key elements that made our wedding so terrific on the beach of Corolla in front of our family and our “beach guests”. The sun was shining and what a beautiful day! We so enjoyed having our toes in the sand with you. You are the best! Our family loved your warm and welcoming personality and the ceremony you had put together just for us! You are wonderful!!!! I would highly recommend you to anyone who is getting married. My family is still raving about you!

  2. Rev. Jay was absolutely the best. I couldn’t have asked for anything more, he made our wedding day fantastic. I can’t tell you how many comments we got from our wedding guests about what a great job he did officiating our ceremony. He made the ceremony relaxed, personal, fun and meaningful. I really didn’t want it to end, it was such a magical time. Rev. Jay was the first vendor that we booked as he came highly recommended and I’m thrilled that we made the decision to go with him. He listened to exactly what we wanted and gave us the wedding of our dreams. It fit us exactly. Many people commented on how this was the first wedding they had been to where they actually listened to everything that was said. I can’t recommend him more for anyone looking to get married on the Outer Banks, you absolutely won’t regret your decision!

    • Dear Caroline, what a beautiful note you left. Wow, not sure what to say except thank you so much. It truly was my honor to stand with you two on your wedding day. Remember, take good care of each other! (I know you will).

  3. What can I say about Jay….I have grown up on the outer banks and one of my jobs is Catering weddings. I get the pleasure of sharing the happiest day of a lot of couple’s lives. I have seen many officiants and heard many vows exchanged, and they are all wonderful, but then there was the day I heard Jay’s voice. Listening to him and watching everyone’s expressions as he engaged them in the ceremony with more than just his words. I said to one of my co-workers “I don’t know who that man is but when I find the one, he will marry us.” October 16, 2010 I was blessed with not only my husband but the honor of having Jay there with us. He truly made our wedding unforgettable! He made us relaxed, our ceremony personal, he came and saw me before he went down to the beach, I mean really Jay went above and beyond all of our expectations. I highly recommend booking with Jay so that you can experience the best day of your life the way I did, and the way so many other happy couples have in the past, and will in the future!! You rock Jay!!!!

  4. Jay you did such an amazing job at our October 15, 2010 wedding ceremony. Our Big Day wouldn’t have been the same without you! 6. Our ceremony with Rev. Jay had the perfect balance we were looking for. It was serious and formal, and fun all at the same time. Didn’t even know it was possible to have such a great combination of things in the ceremony. He made us feel so comfortable and our guests still say how great and fun the ceremony was. We could have not asked for a better ceremony. We can say he was a part of what we consider our “all star” wedding team. Everyone in our wedding team worked great together.
    Thanks Rev. Jay

  7. Dear Reverend Bowman,
You did an amazing job officiating at our Nov. 13th ceremony – the pace and overall tone was perfect! Your choice of words made the experience very moving, and we appreciated the lighter moments and the perfect balance created between all the elements! Enjoy the holidays! Thanks again, Tess and Dale

  8. Dear Rev. Jay,
I just wanted to thank you for doing such an amazing job as officiant at our wedding. You made the ceremony so personal and heartfelt – I don’t think there was a dry eye in the crowd. My dad, who secretly probably would’ve loved to see us married in a traditional, ultra religious manner, was awed by your words and said, “Wow, he has a gift!” That you do.
We’re forever grateful to you for making a special day even more special! Huge Thanks, Chad and Beth

  10. First of all this review is way past due. Jay married my daughter and son in law April 17 2010 at the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo. I can not express what an amazing job he did. Many of our guest expressed just how much they enjoyed service and felt that the bride and groom had known him a long time. Not the case as this was a destination wedding. All I can say is WOW and thank you for making this day so perfect for Rob and Courtney.

  11. That was a great day and happy to celebrate it with you and your kids. Please tell Rob and Courtney hello for me, and give them a hug, too! Thank you, Rev. Jay

  12. Firstly this is also extremely overdue. Jay we just wanted to express our sincere graditude for the most fabulous day in our new life together. The experience of planning a beach wedding is both nerve racking and exhilarating.Jay you made us feel like we were old friends from the neighborhood and eventhough we had just recently met you we knew you were the one to marry us.It seems that on occasion the allignment of things is just right…..the day was truly magnifigant…dawn on the beach at Duck..a lovely soft beach breeze..the sun breaching the horizon..my beautiful bride standing beside me..nothing compares to this. We will always be appreciative and think fondly of you and your kind and loving words. We do intend to take you up on your offer of coffee at the beach! Thank you again

  13. Hi Jay!
Asher and I just wanted to tell you how amazing our wedding day was with you as our officiant! We really couldn’t have asked for anyone better to marry us on our wedding day. You really made it special for us and it meant a lot how personal you made it for our families. The sand ceremony was absolutely perfect for us to include our son and to give us an amazingly memorable keepsake from our special day! Our families loved your ceremony and felt like you’ve known us for years! We just can’t thank you enough for being so involved in our big day. I’m going to recommend you to everyone that I can! Thank you again and God bless!

    • Caroline, thank you so much for those sweet words, and what is so great is that I know you mean every word. I could tell the day we met for the rehearsal that you two were special. Your wedding there where the Hatteras National Seashore begins was an awesome choice. Thank you for your trust. Jay

  14. Jay, thank you so much for creating a unique and special moment not only for my wife and I, but all of our family. Your willingness to provide a surprise ceremony to renew our vows was priceless… or dare I say magical! After 15 years of marriage, to renew our vows on the beach with your special words and actions, your vibrant enthusiasm, all encompassing thoughtfulness and inclusion of our children is a day I, along with everyone in attendance, will never forget.

Thanks again for helping make the experience wonderful!

  15. Jay,
Thanks so much for everything you did on our wedding day. The whole event went so smoothly because of you. So glad we could meet those few times before for coffee. We will definitely have to meet up again when we are back. Everyone loved you and said “Rev. Jay is awesome!” I already knew this of course. We could have never found anyone else so perfect to marry us, and so glad we were lead to you!

  16. Dear Rev. Jay,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for such a beautiful, happy, sincere and most memorable wedding ceremony you performed for Jamie & Mike on 10.7.11.
Your ability to welcome everyone and celebrate with us in such an ”uplifting” and spiritual manner was unforgettable. My wish, initially, was to have a ”church” wedding…however, I know that what you said about the seashore was one of our Lord’s first churches…how true..and to be in the midst of his great creation, surrounded by those that truly love Jamie & Mike was amazing.
The ceremony honored God, his love and creation…and most importantly the love of Jamie & Mike and all of those that shared in their day. We know that Jamie’s dad approved…we have a beautiful photo with the rays from heaven shining directly on Jamie..her dad was truly pleased. Not to mention the perfect formation of geese flying over as she said”I do”..Such a memorable day. Thank you again. God bless you and your family.

  18. Rev. Jay is the BEST!!! What a perfect day for Michael and I and our guests on 10/7/11 on the beach at the Ritz in Duck. We came out to the OBX from Boston in hopes to have an amazing wedding, and it was all that and more, thanks to Jay. From the moment we met him in the coffee shop we knew we made the right choice. He is so inviting, and down to earth, that you’d think you had known him your whole life. Our guests are still remarking about how beautiful and special the ceremony was. It’s hard to put into words just how amazing Jay is. The deliverance, the warmth, the sincerity, he has it all. Thank you again Jay!!!
