Sarah & Jason ~ Wedding with Just Desserts
Photographed by Island Photography
How did you meet?
Jason had already graduated from East Carolina and I was in my Senior year. He had to complete two summer classes in order to complete his degree, one of those classes being Public Speaking. I had been dreading this class, speaking in front of people makes me seriously sick to my stomach, so of course I decided to put it off till the summer thinking the class would be less crowded, I was wrong!
Jason and I did not talk at all during the entire semester until the last two weeks of the class when we ran into each other at the pool where I was babysitting two terrible kids!! He recognized me from class and we started chatting, he ended up saving the day by entertaining the two kids I was babysitting for the entire afternoon. He asked me out on a date for the next day and that was pretty much it. We were inseparable from that day on. He moved to San Diego, CA a month later and I went out to visit him a month after that. A year and a half later I graduated from ECU and moved to San Diego. And as the story goes, we lived happily ever after.

How did you get engaged?
Jason and I were still living 3,000 miles apart, which made most trips to see each other short ones. We had scheduled for him to be home for my best friends wedding in October and then again for a long trip over Christmas. Of course I assumed if he was going to propose it would be over Christmas. Jason, being the intelligent person that he is, figured that was what I was expecting and decided he would pop the question the day after my best friends wedding. He hid the ring box under my pillow while I was sleeping hoping I would wake during the night and scream to the top of my lungs. Unfortunately, for him, I sleep like a log!
So after a sleepless night of waiting for me to wake up, he gave up, and decided he would have to wake me up himself at 6 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING!! Another unfortunate, I am NOT a morning person! He told me he had to ask me a question and could I wake up, this did not make me happy, like I said I sleep very well. Of course you know what the question was. He asked, my eyes bugged out of my head, I obviously said yes, and then I ran to tell my mom. Jason “accidentally” missed his flight the next morning and so we spent the day “frolicking” around town like a couple of lovebirds floating on cloud nine.

Why OBX for your wedding day?
We both love the beach and Jason spent most of his teenage years visiting the OuterBanks. When we decided to visit the Corolla Lighthouse I completely fell in love. The ocean is a sort of calming, relaxing place for both of us, so it seemed like the right place to get married.
How did you decide on your ceremony and reception location?
Is there anything more beautiful than the grounds at the Whalehead Club? It could not have been any prettier.

How many guests did you have?
Around 100ppl
How long did you allow for the wedding planning process?
A year and a half….this was the perfect amount of time! I definitely recommend at least
a year.

Looking back, what was your favorite moment of your wedding day?
Saying our vows, everyone was there watching but it somehow felt so private.
And of course celebrating with everyone afterward.

If you could do one thing different (either in the planning or actual day) what would it be?
I would have planned the ceremony a little earlier to allow for a longer reception; it went by way too fast!

What advice would you give to another bride planning their wedding on the Outer Banks?
Get a wedding planner! At least for the rehearsal and day of the wedding, she will take off all of the pressure! For you and your mom!
